USC on Stafon Johnson Lawsuit

Stafon-Johnson.JPGHere is the USC athletic department's official comment on Stafon Johnson's lawsuit:

"USC firmly believes it was not at fault in Stafon Johnson's unfortunate weightlifting accident.

We are sorry that Stafon was injured.  USC and the entire Trojan Family have been exceptionally supportive of Stafon from the minute the accident occurred.

We are disappointed to learn that Stafon has decided to file a lawsuit against USC."

Sad reflection on today's litigious society. A scumbag, media whore, ambulance chasing attorney gets to Stafon and his mom and talks them into dragging his Trojan "family" through the mud.

A 275 lbs bar was "bumped" out of his hands? Please. If you've ever lifted anywhere near that weight, you know that a "bump" isn't going to budge that bar.

Your attorney is using you to make money, Stafon. Years down the road, he'll be long gone and you will be ostracized from Trojan Nation wishing that you hadn't turned on your "family". You are being exploited.

Come on, Stafon had a great future ahead of him. That was all taken away from him and almost his life in an instant. I love USC, but frankly the spotter appeared to not be paying attention. I've benched 400, but knew if my spotter wasn't paying attention I could be in a lot of trouble fast. If the spotter is focused dropping the bar should never happen, let alone allowing it to land squarely on his neck.

As I understand it, the spotter in this case was not another lifter in the gym; it was a USC strength and conditioning coach. This accident should never have happened. Stefon's life was almost lost and will never be the same. His future also will never be the same. This is hardly ambulance chasing.

I hope they come to a fair agreement and that USC does the right thing for Stefon who is a good kid and gave it everything he had for our program.

My two cents worth...
