NFL Charities has granted the USC Keck School of Medicine $100,000 to study heart rate behavior in professional and USC football players.
This will be the first investigative study into how the heart responds to the intense emotional stress and physical pressure of NFL games.
"We hope that this study will create a safer playing field for all athletes," said Dr. Leslie Saxon, who is the chief of cardiovascular medicine at the Keck School and will head up the study.
The study will break down heart rates of elite NFL players by body mass index, player position and age and then compare the data to USC's football players.
