- Defensive end-turned-quarterback James Boyd took his first (few) snaps from quarterback in live action as a Trojan.  While his enormous upside was evident, head coach Lane Kiffin noted it was also clear that he is still learning the position after making the switch a week ago.

- Wide receivers Ronald Johnson (elbow) and Kyle Prater (sore back) participated only in the individual drills portion of practice.  Kiffin said they are day-to-day.

- After last Saturday's scrimmage, Kiffin voiced his displeasure with the running game.  Asked today if that feeling still held up after he watched video of the scrimmage, he said:  "We weren't consistent up front.  We weren't consistent with the backs.  And the receivers didn't block well.  That all has been addressed.  It was good to have that happen now."

- Former Trojan players Chris Hale, Tim McDonald and Allan Graf observed practice, as did a group from the San Gabriel Valley Trojan Club.

- As the Trojans left the field around 7 p.m. and headed to the warmth of the lockerroom, the USC baseball team was beginning its game against UC Santa Barbara on adjoining Dedeaux Field.  Brrrrrrrrr!
