More from Howard Jones Field

- Linebacker Michael Morgan came away with an interception early on in practice after Shareece Wright made a nice play to deflect the ball off the intended receiver.

- During seven-on-seven passing drills, safety Byron Moore made a Willie Mays-esque over-the-shoulder interception on a deep ball.

- Even nose tackle Christian Tupou got in on the pass coverage action by knocking down a short screen intended for Stanley Havili.

- Fullback Hunter Simmons leveled Wright, who came up for an attempted tackle as Simmons rumbled with the ball around the left side.

- Credit linebacker Devon Kennard with the other big hit of the day, as he steamrolled Marc Tyler for a loss during a full-squad scrimmage on Brian Kennedy Field.

- With former offensive tackle Charles Brown preparing for next week's NFL draft, redshirt sophomore Matt Kalil has stepped into the role of overbearing O-lineman. The 6-6 Kalil towers over most of his defenders (and fellow blockers) at the blindside tackle position.

- Practice concluded with a pair of redzone touchdown throws to Brice Butler and Ronald Johnson. Butler acrobatically reeled in a pass to the near corner, after quarterback Matt Barkley rolled to his right to keep the play alive. Mitch Mustain then hooked up with a leaping Johnson on a rollout to his left to conclude practice.

- Afterward, head coach Lane Kiffin complimented Barkley and Johnson on their play thus far. "(Barkley) continues to throw the ball extremely well downfield," he said before noting the good chemistry that the duo has fostered during spring camp. "They have really grown together throughout the spring," Kiffin added.

- With injuries affecting the tight end roster, Jordan Cameron stood out by catching a short buttonhook over the middle and taking it for a touchdown, and later channeling his basketball skills by executing a tip drill to haul in a short pass.

- Former USC head coach John Robinson, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame last year, watched today's practice. Also observing the action today were Joe and Emily Danelo, the parents of late Trojan placekicker Mario Danelo. Joe also sat in the special teams meeting prior to practice.

- Former Trojans Chris Hale, Nick Vanderboom also watched practice from the sideline.

- Kiffin concluded by saying about his team:  "It's time to go to the next level."
