More from Howard Jones Field

- With the first two full-pads practices featuring a heavy dose of defense, the Trojan offense let it rip today with some highlight reel plays. "I was very pleased the way the offense responded," head coach Lane Kiffin proudly stated after practice. "(They) responded today after getting beat up."

- During seven-on-seven drills, Mitch Mustain connected with Ronald Johnson on a 55-yard touchdown bomb that hit the receiver perfectly in stride. Kiffin was again impressed by Johnson's play. "Ronald continues to make big plays for us down the field," he said of his veteran receiver.

- Mustain followed his pass to RoJo by again airing it out and hitting Travon Patterson for a long touchdown. Later in the drill, Mustain scrambled away from pressure and drew in the linebackers by threatening to take off with the ball, before stepping back and hitting Kyle Prater in the back of the endzone.

- Matt Barkley joined the longball fun, hooking up with Brice Butler on a 40-yard pass during seven-on-seven play. Butler, demonstrating his strength and athleticism, elevated between two defensive backs to reel in the pass.

- Barkley not only looked sharp with his completions, but also rather fleet of foot. "He's really picking up the offense," Kiffin said, while also noting that the sophomore quarterback's improved agility could be a result of his body fat dipping below 9 percent.

- Butler wasn't the only receiver wowing the crowd with spectacular play; freshman Prater continued his impressive showing today, diving low at the goal line pylon to make a Mike Williams-esque one-handed scoring grab. Robbie Boyer and Jordan Cameron each fought off multiple defenders to haul in long aerials to the delight of the fans in attendance.

- Center John Martinez made a nice take-down block on Wes Horton, drawing loud hoots from his offensive teammates.

- In a one-on-one passing drill, Torin Harris came up with an endzone interception.

- Kiffin liked what he saw with the team's level of intensity. "It's really almost a scrimmage out here, the way we practice," he said of his team's effort.

- Some more former Trojan players attended practice today, including Chris Claiborne, Bernard Riley, Lonnie Ford, Rod Sherman, Cedric Jefferson, Mark Spino, Allan Graf and Oscar Lua.

- The Trojans have Friday off, then return to the practice field on Saturday at 11 a.m.  They are expected to scrimmage during part of that practice.

- Even though there's no practice on Friday, the Trojans' coaching staff will be busy as the first day of the USC Football Coaches Clinic kicks off at 3 p.m.
