Gauntlet race is tight

This is a big week for the USC-UCLA rivalry and the Crosstown Gauntlet competition.

Currently, the Gauntlet (the all-sports competition between the intracity rivals) has USC barely in the lead, 45 to 42.5.  To clinch the trophy, 57.5 points are needed.

This week, 5 points are up for grabs in each of 4 different sports.  The 3-day Pac-10 men's golf championship started today and whichever team finishes higher wins those points.  On Saturday, the schools meet in women's rowing in the morning at the USC Boathouse, then that afternoon the men's and women's track teams square off in the annual dual meet at Drake Stadium.  USC fans, come out Saturday and support your Trojans!

All that's remaining on the regular-season schedule after that are 3 Trojan-Bruin baseball games in mid-May in Westwood.  (Of course, the schools also could meet in the post-season in a couple sports and those outcomes could have point ramifications, as well as tiebreaker consequences.)

So stay tuned, the 2009-2010 Crosstown Gauntlet race could come down to the wire.

USC has won the past two Gauntlets and 5 overall in the competition's 8-year history.
