Head of the class

The official Fall 2009 grades are in, and the USC athletic department is looking awfully good.

In all, 285 student-athletes -- nearly half of the USC athletic department population -- recorded a 3.0 GPA last fall, including 18 football players. Also, 117 student-athletes made the Dean's List (a 3.5 or higher GPA) and 14 had perfect 4.0 GPAs. Read the release about USC's fine academic record in the fall, and here's the list of Trojan football players who had a 3.0 or higher:

  • WR Steve Blackhart
  • K Jordan Congdon
  • WR/QB Garrett Green
  • LB Devon Kennard
  • TE Ian Wandler
  • Student coach Frankie Telfort
  • WR Preston Cavignac
  • DB Rob Erickson
  • LB Nick Garratt
  • TE Bryson Lloyd
  • OL Jeff Byers
  • TE Cooper Stephenson
  • LB Dan Deckas
  • LB Jarvis Jones
  • QB John Manoogian
  • S Drew McAllister
  • OL Garrett Nolan
  • LB Michael Morgan

Congratulations to each individual Trojan athlete on the list and the USC Athletic Department for this great achievement. We should be as proud of these student's academic achievements as we are their athletic prowess. We need to remember that they are students first and athletes second. Special thanks to Ben and his USCRIPSIT feature writers for sharing with us during the Fall the processes and resources available to our student athletets to assure their success. It was a real disappointment when a few of the more high profile football players were ineligible for the Emerald Bowl because of academic reasons given the emphasis and resources available to them. Let this be a challenge to some of the remaining high profile players like Matt Barkley, Allen Bradford, and Chris Galippo to have their names on this list of academic success next time around. They have the ability to be successful in both the classroom and the field. Fight On!
