Pete Carroll owes the land of Troy nothing. It is silly to read so many "fans" who feel he somehow betrayed them in some way. He was paid to be the head coach of USC's football program and in nearly 10 years, he was arguably the best at it, building what was essentially a laughing stock (and it was - remembering 8 straight losses to UCLA), into not just a top 10 college football team, but the team to watch in Los Angeles, the second largest media market in the country. He made college football cool and part of the conversation, when the NFL was clearly the star attraction. He made USC cool, regularly bringing in millions to my alma mater, just as he did gleaming Tiffany & Co. trophies to Heritage Hall. He was grounded in defyingly amazing ways, relating to an autograph or photo seeking fan just as well as Hollywood A list actors and rappers, high profile recruits, rich donors, demanding alumni, high school coaches via his NIKE clinics, and inquiring sports writers. He brought USC tradition back, getting the uniform changed back and having home colors for the annual USC/UCLA contest. He brought Marcus Allen, Curtis Conway, and Ronnie Lott back to participate in the program. He did so with a cool grace that can hardly be described, let alone matched. I doubt USC will ever compete with Carroll's incredible run. I know USC will never meet the lofty expectations Carroll created for the football program. I am left to remember better days and to vent in words on blogs like this to somehow express my deep sadness and ultimate frustration. Buona fortuna Coach ComPETE Carroll. You leave Trojan football in a better place than where you found it. And for that we should all be grateful. I, for one, will always be "IN."
As a three time alumnus, I am pissed at Mike Garret for throwing Pete Carrol under the bus for the Joe McKnight investigation and believe this is one of the primary reasons he is leaving USC. I hope the Alumni rally around this blog to get rid of Mike Garret who is the real reason why USC's mens athletics is in trouble. We need to act fast and fire the AD and hire a new football coaching staff(if that can even be done now). This is a very sad day for one very proud Trojan.
Tiffany & Co. "trophies" plural? Please guy won one BCS Championship. Lets not put him quite so high up on the pedastal.
I am left with the words from the man himself, spoken during an interview with Ben on 8/28/07 in which he said that he never wanted to leave USC: "It's come up every year for six years now," said Carroll (about the NFL rumors). "I don't know how many times I have to say it: I'm not going anywhere." 'Nuff said. Farewell, Pete. Thanks for the last nine years. Now it's time for USC and the true Trojan Family to move on.
Brad, Rose Bowl trophies are made by Tiffany & Co. And SC won plenty of those in the Pete Carroll era. BCS National championship trophies are made by Waterford, the crystal company. Please before you comment or post, do research and know what you are writing about buddy.
Dont let the door hit your ass on the way out. No more losses to inferior pac ten teams. HOOORAAHHHH!
How are the circumstances in which he is leaving NOT odd? I totally respect the guy as a coach but you don't leave a program like this because the Seattle job is too good to pass up. Check with Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and Bobby Petrino. I really wish him luck and hope for the best. I just find it strange that he could so readily take this big of a gamble...
LP its the Seattle Frickin Seahawks. A team full of history, prestige, notoriety and influence. Not to mention they drafted the "BoZ" and they have cool turquoise and lime green uniforms. I mean any time a team that great calls you have to listen right? right?
Fire Mike Garrett NOW!
thanks for everything coach carroll... you are a great coach and man and i sure hope you stay close to the usc family... i wish you the best and some of your moments as head coach here are my best moments as well as a fan...
mike garrett needs to go, and now! he has been an embarrassment and has let one of the elite institutions down... usc will not move on successfully until garrett is out!
