Thoughts from Friday's practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt...

- During a sunrise practice on a dew-soaked Howard Jones Field, wideout Jordan Cameron caught 13 passes for 111 yards to headline the Trojans' 81-play no-pads scrimmage that closed out the bye week and sent the team into a two-day break. To tie a bow on the scrimmage and his week, Cameron, who Coach Carroll called the player of the bye, snagged a jump-ball touchdown from Matt Barkley in the left corner of the end zone on the final play of the day. "He's going to play in the game and get more reps," Carroll said of Cameron. "That's a great example of what we hope can happen in a week like this."

- Other than Cameron's standout performance, the defense dominated from start to finish in the lively minimal-contact scrimmage. Cornerbacks Kevin Thomas and Josh Pinkard each had an interception to lead a defense that allowed just three touchdowns and a field goal in 14 drives.

- Besides Cameron's touchdown reception, tailback C.J. Gable ran for a short score, wideout Travon Patterson caught a touchdown and kicker Joe Houston nailed a 30-yard field goal for the scrimmage's other scores.

- In the post-practice huddle, Carroll drew attention to Cameron, offensive lineman Nick Howell and safeties Jawanza Starling and T.J. McDonald for their performances during the bye week's four practices. "I'm proud of how you guys took advantage of your opportunities this week," Carroll said.

- Carroll said defensive end Everson Griffen, who has missed a majority of the workouts since injuring his toe against Oregon, should resume practicing full-speed on Monday.

- As is his tradition before a lengthy break from football, Carroll sent the players into the 72-hour weekend respite with counsel about how to approach the days off. "We've got to have a conscience and a mindset to make the right decisions wherever we are," Carroll said in the post-practice team huddle. "Rule No. 1 is in effect -- always protect the team in everything you do."
