Statement from Stafon Johnson's surgeons

Below is the latest update from the two surgeons, Dr. Jason S. Hamilton and Dr. Ryan F. Osborne of the Osborne Head and Neck Institute, who performed the seven-hour reconstructive surgery on Stafon Johnson's throat on Sept. 28. To clarify any conflicting reports, they issued this statement regarding his injury and recovery:

"Stafon suffered a complex injury involving more than 70 percent of his larynx. Put simply, the voice box was crushed and the upper portion was separated from the lower portion. The majority of the lining of his larynx (voice box) was degloved (stripped off), exposing critical structures for breathing and speech. In addition to microsurgical reconstruction and the repair of laryngeal fractures, he required placement of a feeding tube from his nose to his stomach, and a tracheostomy tube to help him breathe.

"He recently underwent an operative evaluation of his larynx, which showed continued progress in a positive direction. Due to the continued need for tube feedings, the nasogastric tube will be replaced with a gastrostomy tube. The gastrostomy tube will be far more comfortable for Stafon and allow him to maintain the nutritional balance needed during his recovery.

"We expect Stafon to be discharged from the hospital in a few days. He will require multiple minor laryngeal procedures in the near future which will be managed on an outpatient basis. Though it remains far too early to make any predictions regarding the long term function of his larynx, he has shown great strides in his initial recovery. He has an amazing attitude and a will to overcome all obstacles presented during this difficult time."

Loyal Trojan fan! Carmen

great job on surgery, but when can we get him back on field? Isn't that the reason everyone is concerned? If we get him back to practice soon he could help us in that Oregon game on Oct. 31...

Right on, lets Fight On!

I am also a Ducks fan that never pulls for the Trojans on the field, but I am definitely pulling for this Trojan to make huge strides. Stafon, I wish you the best and I will follow your updates hoping you can recover 100%

So nice to read concerned comments from others, especially our opponents. That shows such good will and an understanding of what is truly important for Stafon--or any player that is injured--that he return to a productive and happy life, playing football or not. Keep that great positive attitude Stafon! Liz

Being a complete newbie, all I can say is thanks for sharing this.
