Two offensive players who stepped up to start in Saturday's win over Oregon State are continuing to receive praise from coaches.
D.J. Shoemate played fullback in lieu of 31-game starter Stanley Havili (out with a dislocated shoulder) and Butch Lewis filled in at the starting guard spot voided by Jeff Byers, who moved to center. Both players greatly impressed the coaches and are in line to start again this weekend at Oregon.
"D.J. didn't get the opportunities in the passing game but he was on his assignments and he blocked his butt off," running backs coach Todd McNair said. "He'll be ready to roll this weekend if Stanley's not back. We'll be missing Stanley's experience but D.J. brings a hard-nosed attitude, great effort and excellent work ethic."
Meanwhile, Lewis played so well that Coach Carroll said he was "one of the players of the game."
"Butch couldn't have risen up and surpassed expectations much more than he did on Saturday," Carroll said. "He was overpowering guys in the running game and his pass protection was awesome."
