Geared up

The equipment room is buzzing this afternoon as preparations for the season's first game shift into fifth gear. Student equipment managers and full-time staffers are fitting the game jerseys over players' pads and a crew of them will head over to the Coliseum this afternoon to begin setting up the locker room for tomorrow's game.

Football equipment coordinator Tino Dominguez affixes Velcro to linebacker Jordan Campbell's shoulder pads. The Velcro is used so that a player's jersey will stick to his pads, preventing opponents from holding him or tackling him by pulling on his jersey.

Student equipment manager Brian Wagner fits David Ausberry's game-day jersey over his pads this afternoon in the equipment room. Because of the Velcro on player's pads, putting the tight-fitting jersey over the gear takes several meticulous minutes, so the student equipment managers perform the duty for the players every Friday before a game.

Ben, i am curious about all the equipment the players wear ,i.e., helmet, all pads, uniforms, cleats, injury support braces etc. I see the equip trainers adding Velcro to the pads which adds only a tiny bit more but still it is extra weight.

How many total pounds does all this add up to?

thanks ben
