Volunteer effort

The summer strength and conditioning program kicks off June 8, which gives the players more than a month to conduct voluntary workouts. They're also known as "discretionary workouts," as the strength and conditioning staff cannot oversee the sessions.

And some players aren't waiting around, as they have already hit the weights this morning to begin the more than five-week period of voluntary workouts.

Or, as offensive lineman Jeff Byers prefers to call it, he and his teammates are "discretionarily working out."

I truly believe this is the time when the chemistry and "team" is actually formed. Players push and bond with one another during this very important phase of the season.
