The offseason for Coach Pete Carroll has been anything but "off."
If anything, he's been totally "on."
With football season over and the winter months mostly open until Spring Practice began March 28, Carroll turned into a touring motivational speaker for an extremely wide-ranging audience -- anyone from volleyball coaches to teenage surfers to business leaders.
"The opportunity to reach coaches at all levels is something I'm very humbled by," Carroll said. "The influence these coaches have on their teams, businesses and families is very powerful as I can remember every coach I had as a kid. In fact, I still talk to my high school coach over the phone before every game."
Over the past several months, Carroll has partnered with Nike to speak at a diverse spectrum of events in an effort to motivate, inspire and share his "Win Forever" philosophy. Take a look at the audiences the ninth-year USC coach has been spoken to during the last few months:
- CIF high school football coaches at the Home Depot Center in December.
- High school volleyball coaches in January.
- Track and field coaches in February.
- Members of the Junior USA Surf team in Huntington Beach prior to the World Championships in February.
- High school and junior college football coaches during the 6th annual USC/Nike Coach of the Year Clinic on campus in March.
All told, Carroll addressed and inspired thousands of coaches and athletes from four distinct sports, earning some high praises from those associated with the events.
"The feedback from the coaches has been overwhelmingly positive," said Tanya Lopez, media relations manager for Nike. "Pete's talks inspired them and made them think about what their own coaching philosophies are."
These speeches don't even include the seminar Carroll gave to professional and amateur golfers in Burbank in February, a motivational talk he delivered to a council of businesspeople in February and an internet video chat he conducted last weekend with a football team in England. All told, it's been a busy, highly productive -- and exciting -- offseason for Carroll.
"While the spring was busy it was exactly how I wanted it -- fast paced, competitive, and extremely motivating," Carroll said. "I've loved being able to connect with coaches and athletes from so many different sports and arenas of life. It's been a great experience for everybody."
All coaches, athletes and fans are invited to USC's practices this spring. They're open to the public and offer a unique glimpse into the workings of the Trojan football program. Get the schedule here.

I remember taking my Dad to the Coach's tour stop as a Father's Day gift in Pasadena after Pete's first year. My pop is a pretty stoic character, but seeing the joy on his face after Pete stopped by our table and chatted the old man up was priceless. I will be forever grateful for that act of kindness. Fight On Baby!!!
