Showing some fire

If first impressions go a long way, then first-year quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach Jeremy Bates should be quite the leader for the Trojan offense.

During this morning's meetings, Bates spoke in front of the entire offense for the first time since being hired in January, providing a fiery and energizing speech to get the players pumped for today's practice, which will include a lengthy scrimmage-like session.

Several times during his 10-minute address, the normally reserved Bates had the offensive players standing, clapping and cheering with his stirring words in anticipation of practice today. Even offensive coordinator John Morton, who normally speaks to the offense as a whole, came to the front of the room after Bates' speech with obvious excitement following the rousing pep talk from USC's play-caller.

But as impressive as Bates was today, one person thinks the best is yet to come.

"Wait 'til it's the day before a game," said Keary Colbert, a former USC wideout who was sitting in on this morning's meetings and someone who played under Bates at the Denver Broncos. "They haven't seen the half of it."
