Saying the right thing

Loyal RipsIt reader Amy Dam e-mailed in with an interesting question: "Does Coach Carroll teach the players how to answer questions from the media and everyone else? What does he tell them?"

For the Trojans and the media, it all comes down to one guideline -- the team's "Rule No. 1," which is "always protect the team." That rule applies to everything, whether it's on the field or off, and especially with the media and what the players say. Coach Carroll doesn't give any seminars or tips on how to deal with the media other than to constantly refer back to that all-important tenet.

"Rule No. 1 is all about having a conscience and our guys have a really strong conscience about protecting the team in everything they do," Carroll said. "You've got to have a humility in dealing with the media and the guys have really taken hold of that principle."
