Laying it on thick

The USC offense has a legendarily thick and complex playbook.

But the crazy thing is, it gets beat out by someone in the same building.

The Trojan strength and conditioning program has an 890-sheet record book of all the workouts the players completed during 2008, a manual that's more than double the size of the 2008 offensive playbook, which includes every play and formation for the USC offense.

The 890 sheets of paper in the four-inch-thick strength and conditioning program's 2008 record book easily outdistance the offense's 360-sheet-thick playbook and more than quadruple the size of the USC defense's 195-sheet 2008 playbook, showing just how detailed and precise the Trojan strength and conditioning staff trains the Trojans throughout the year.

"Everything's accounted for -- it's not just something we make up as we go," ninth-year head strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle said. "The workouts are something we carefully plan day-by-day for the whole year's preparation process."
