Hash it out

Even when it seems like practice is just a bunch of players playing and coaches coaching, the details of the preparation shock you into a deeper appreciation of the process.

Coaches painstakingly script every play for each practice -- but it's more than just the play they're planning out. The yard line, down and distance and even the hash mark is plotted before the Trojans take the field for each workout, and it all happens with surprising science, especially regarding which hash mark the ball is placed on.

For every set of five plays, two snaps are taken from the left hash, one from the middle of the field and two from the right hash. And why is that, exactly?

"In the history of football, 77 percent of the time the ball is on one of the hashes, so that's why we do this system," Coach Carroll said.
