Thoughts from Friday's practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt...

- Several standout plays turned a potentially ho-hum middle-of-the-spring practice into an impressive highly competitive workout, as the quarterbacks and wideouts logged several highlights on a perfect afternoon at USC.

- During an 11-on-11 run-focused period near the start of practice, Mitch Mustain launched a pass deep to receiver Damian Williams, who hauled it in with one hand while tapping his toes inbounds along the left sideline.

- Later, in 7-on-7 drills, wideout Brice Butler used just one hand to snag a bullet from Aaron Corp in the corner of the end zone. Corp, who was noticeably energized throughout the practice, proceeded to run down the field toward Butler with his arms spread like wings to celebrate the play.

- Matt Barkley got into the highlights when he threw a perfect 10-yard fade to wideout David Ausberry in the back left corner of the end zone. Then, with the pocket collapsing around him on one play during team period, Barkley magnificently tossed a deep ball off his back foot to receiver Ronald Johnson about 30 yards downfield.

- The defense was not at a loss for big-time plays, either, as the pressure-packed defensive line recorded eight sacks in only 15 plays during one segment of 11-on-11 drills at the end of practice, with nearly every lineman posting a sack.

- On a run play during the practice-ending team period, safety Taylor Mays had a vicious forced fumble on a gang tackle, and the defense recovered the ball in the dog pile.

- The offense took over the 20-play 7-on-7 period, completing 15 passes and throwing five touchdowns.

- The Trojans finished practice with a two-minute drill for the first and second units. Aaron Corp, at the helm of the first-team offense, guided the unit to within short field goal range with no time left (though the kick went wide right). Then to end the day, the Mitch Mustain-led drive ended prematurely after a botched shotgun snap.

- Former coach John Robinson attended practice.
