All about the ball

Day 3 of Spring Practice 2009 is underway, and the Trojans have already completed specials teams, team and offense/defense meetings, with the players now in position group meetings before a half-pads practice at 4 p.m.

It's Turnover Thursday today, and Coach Carroll started the team meeting off with one stat to emphasize how important turnovers are for the Trojans.

The overhead slide read "+107" -- referring to the total turnover margin in Carroll's eight seasons at USC -- and it surely got everyone's attention.

"That is a remarkable number," Carroll told the team. "No team in the history of football has had a run like that."

So the emphasis is smack dab on the football today, which is providing a challenge for an offensive unit that threw a few interceptions and had several loose balls during Tuesday's practice.

"We've got to take care of the football," Carroll said.

Offensive coordinator John Morton stressed the philosophy of ball protection with an impassioned speech during the offense's meeting.

"It's not about the defense; it's about us and having a conscience about the ball," Morton said. "It ain't about them; it's about us always."
