Thoughts from Tuesday's practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt...

- A ball-hawking defense dominated the final team period to capture a 19-14 overall victory on Competition Tuesday, the second workout of Spring Practice 2009. Safety Will Harris' pick-six interception on the last play of the day sealed the deal for the defense. "We have to battle day in and day out to make us who we are," Coach Carroll told the Trojans after the practice.

- The offense, propelled by the shimmering performances of Matt Barkley and Mitch Mustain, shined in 7-on-7 drills, going 12-of-15 passing in the 15-play period. Barkley rifled a pass to tight end Rhett Ellison on a deep route over the middle on the final snap of the period.

- During the 9-on-7 run-oriented period, the tailbacks logged several impressive runs, inducing a classic quote from running backs coach Todd McNair: "Watch out! It's the Indy 500!"

- During team period, nose tackle Jurrell Casey had one of the highlight plays of the day when he chased down the runner from behind, caused a fumble and recovered the loose ball, much to the delight of his coaches.

- One of the standout snaps of the scrimmage-like team period came when Barkley connected with wideout Brice Butler for a "Moss" catch -- he jumped over the cornerback to snag the lofted pass -- that caused the offensive players to go berserk.

- Safety Drew McAllister recorded a spectacular soaring interception in an early-practice 7-on-7 drill. He also had a leaping pick in the final team period that was nullified because of a defensive holding penalty.

- On one play during team period, tailback Marc Tyler broke free for a long run up the middle thanks to stellar blocking from the offensive line.

- The field goal unit showed marked improvement from Saturday, as the kickers combined to go 8-of-10 on field goals. Jordan Congdon and Joe Houston both went 4-of-5 from various distances.
